Mitigo-Waakaa'igan · “Log Cabin” in Ojibwe
A log cabin on the North Shore
A handcrafted log home in the woods above Lake Superior — stone fireplace, soaring log trusses, and the big lake just down the hill.
The Cabin
Mitigo-Waakaa'igan
Mitigo-Waakaa'igan — literally meaning “Log Cabin” in the Ojibwe language — is a log home located on Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior. Construction on the cabin was started in the fall of 2002.
Mike Senty, of Senty Handcrafted Log Homes, provided the log work, and Peter Borson of Borson Construction provided the general contracting work. Steve and Steve did a majority of the interior work themselves — the stone fireplace, the loft railings, and the kitchen all came together by hand.
Photos
Three cameras, every 30 minutes
Stills from the cabin's own cameras, refreshed every 30 minutes. Each camera holds the same view — what changes from photo to photo is the time, and the light that comes with it. The time under each photo is that file's real last-updated time, read from the server when you view this page and re-checked every minute — so when a new still lands, its photo and caption roll over together. The Lake
Lake Superior
Lake Superior (French: Lac Supérieur) is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America. The lake is shared by Canada's Ontario to the north, the United States' Minnesota to the west, and Wisconsin and Michigan to the south.
It is generally considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. It is the world's third-largest freshwater lake by volume, and the largest by volume in North America.
The County
Cook County, Minnesota
Life is bigger here in Cook County, MN, along legendary Highway 61. Here in the tip of Minnesota's Arrowhead, amidst the North Shore of Lake Superior and the pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), you can go bigger, play harder, and relax better than anywhere else in the Midwest.
The cabin sits near Schroeder, with Grand Marais up the shore — close to the Superior Hiking Trail, the Boundary Waters, and some of the darkest night skies in the Midwest.
